“In early June the world of leaf and blade and flowers explodes, and every sunset is different.” — John Steinbeck
While our main campus is currently closed for electrical and HVAC work, we have plenty to offer off-site during the month of June. Kicking off our lineup is the opening reception for the Tapestry Weavers South guild’s New Works exhibition on Friday, June 3, from 6:00-8:00 PM at The Studio, a new pop-up classroom space for the YVFC and mini-FAC gallery. The Studio is located on North Bridge Street, between the Farmer’s Market/Town Hall and The Wisdom Table. Parking is available at Town Hall for those interested in attending (and aren’t we all — the intricate tapestry work is remarkable!)
This year, we’re thrilled to offer Summer Art Adventures for youth. Our themed visual art camp is scheduled for June 20-24 at a studio retreat in Traphill. Parents and guardians have the choice between a morning or afternoon session, ensuring that any rising 1st-12th grade student can enjoy a week of mixed-media art experiences, including oil and chalk pastel, graphite and charcoal pencil, watercolor and tempera paint, printmaking, and papier-mâché. Sessions are limited to a dozen students and will feature both indoor and outdoor art enrichment activities. Registration closes June 11, so please don’t hesitate to reserve a seat for the most important young artists in your life!
For a weekend of soulful music, check out the Elkin Roots Music Fest, hosted by The Reeves Theater & Cafe on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25. This two-day event has, erm, roots in an old-fashioned jam session in the park. To read more about the history of the festival, click here.
And just in time for the dog days of summer, we’re seeing spots — 101 of them, to be exact! The Foothills Kid’s Theatre performance of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians will take place at the Elkin High School in the Dixon Auditorium, with performances on June 24 and 25 at 7:30 PM. Many young actors (and several seasoned actors, too!) have been rehearsing for months to present this captivating tale, a performance that is im-paw-sible to miss!
To close the month, our Plein Air Painter’s Group excursion is to the gorgeous Piccione Vineyards on Sunday, June 26 from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. Enjoy a quiet morning at a normally bustling vineyard with exclusive access before business hours. As always, please remember to purchase a ticket for admittance and enjoy a day of community, creativity, coffee — and maybe even a glass of award-winning wine — to commemorate a finished painting or sketch!
